The first and the most important step is inventory assessment.

Why do you need inventory assessment?

You might have lots of data and you might be not sure about what to fetch from Slack? When you go for migration, examining the data that needs migration is very important. The entire workspace, including Direct/ Multiparty Chats, channels, messages, files, users, activity, needs to be examined for inventory. Determine what need to be moved.

The workspace in Slack is different from Microsoft Teams. Hence you should identify, review and analyze the channels before going for migration. This process can be quite a time consuming one but it is crucial and helps to go through the analysis before migration.

Although the Team’s chats and Slack’s direct messages are almost identical, migrating direct messages is a different process.

Migrating from Slack – the second step!

Before migration, the admins or the migration point of contact should build a map for users and channels/chats from Source to target.

There are two different types of mapping,

1. User mapping

We map Slack users with respective target Office 365 users to migrate messages on behalf of actual mapped users.

2. Channel / Chat mapping

We map slack channels/chats with existing MS Teams and Channels to migrate conversations into respective mapped MS Teams and Channels.

Once you finish the Slack to Teams mapping, your channels will go to Teams. You can have as many as 200 channels and 1 general channel per team including the deleted channel, however, if you have more to be migrated, you can divide and break them into groups.

The final step is migration!

In this step, you just have to migrate the data from Slack to Teams! You will have an almost similar feature and more importantly, there will be no data loss.
